Raku Firing

I had a recent opportunity to Raku fire at the Anam Cre Pottery Studio in San Luis Obispo. Big fun. “American” or “Western” raku: a process in which work is removed from the kiln at bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials, which blackens raw clay and causes crazing in the glaze surface. Needless to say, I am looking forward to more Raku sessions.

This planter which came out of the kiln was a collaborative effort by Van Doan (pot) and me (glazing).
